Brand new sound clip!!!! ... from last July
But first... a note from the webmaster:
One of the problems of knowing nothing about technology or how anything
functions is that on the rare occasion that you get something to work, you
have a hard time explaining to someone else how you did it. Which, I probably
need not tell you, makes for a lousy webmaster.
In the past year that I have been webmaster I have done the bare minimum
to get sound clips up and the like. I've ignored every technological break
through.. you wanted real audio with stream playback.. "tough"
I said.. you wanted Java animation.. I said "no way!" but I can
ignore the drums of progress no longer. So the Spazztet Website now features
MP3... BUT...
MP3 is not what you might think it is. Although this is the format that
is making record companies fear for their lives it has some drawbacks. For
example even though the file is ten times smaller than what it would be
if it wasn't encoded.. it's still huge. So when downloading I suggest you
make yourself a sandwich and eat it.... and maybe pay a bill... and then
come back to your computer to see if the file has landed. In addition, unlike
Real Audio or Wav files, you can't just click the link and wait for it to
play. This MP3 file that I uploaded makes the average cat seem easy to please.
There are a bunch of hoops to jump through (at least on my Mac) to get this
to work.
So.. is it worth the trouble. OH YES!!!! These files sound almost as good
as CDs. They come to your computer without scratchy noises, or skipping.
All of this and the file can be longer than 30 seconds. You can even put
MP3 files onto mini discs and CDs after you've downloaded them and this
is why the record companies are nervous.
Shut up already!!! How do I do this?
You need to download MP3 players. On my computer (power mac) SoundApp
works the most consistantly and MacAmp
works the coolest. The windows based operating system computers use something
called WinAmp. If you have windows
and successfully download this MP3 please send an e-mail
detailing how you did it if you needed to do anything unusual. Quicktime
4 is out now. This will actually allow you to simply click on the link
and wait. It sounded terrible when I tried it but it worked. Over the next
couple of days I will try to make it sound decent for those using the Quicktime
option. General directions for downloading for both Macs and PCs can be
found here.
How to Download this file on a Mac
(assuming that you have already downloaded SoundApp or MacAmp)
1. Click on the link and hold the mouse button down. A box with options
will appear.
2. Choose the option that says "Save as.." or something like that.
3. When saving (and this might just be a Netscape thing) make sure you save
it as "source" and not "text" to your desktop.
4. After the file downloads double click it:
A) If you are lucky
1) SoundApp or MacAmp will just open and play it.
2) a box will appear suggesting different programs that might be able to
open the file
and SoundApp or MacAmp will be one of them. Choose one or the other and
listen
to the music.
B) If you are unlucky (the two options in A did not work)
Step 1) Open SoundApp
Step 2) Go to the file menu
Step 3) Choose "Play" from the menu (not Open.. I don't know why)
Step 4) Select the MP3 you downloaded
Step 5) It should play
If none of this works please email
me and describe what happened.. Or do what I did... futz around until
it works.
